Voice User Interfaces (VUI) and Off-Screen Experience Design

The future of digital interaction is evolving beyond screens towards more natural and intuitive methods, especially voice interfaces (VUI).In this blog post,we examine the rise of VUI, its design principles, and the future of experience design moving away from screen-based interactions.

From Screens to Voices: Naturalizing Interaction

Traditional user interfaces (GUI) required users to be dependent on a specific screen and physical input devices (mouse, keyboard, touchscreen). VUI, on the other hand, breaks these barriers, placing “voice,” our most basic communication tool, at the center of the digital world. Smart assistants (Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant) and voice control systems are integrated into our lives everywhere, from our homes to our cars, from our workplaces to wearable technologies.

Basic Principles of VUI Design

  1. Natural Language Processing (NLP):To enable users to communicate in natural language, in spoken language, instead of complex commands.

  2. Context Sensitivity:The system’s understanding of the user’s intent, past interactions, and current situation.

  3. User Flows:Anticipating that voice interactions are not linear, and may include different branches and returns.

  4. Descriptive and Being Understandable:Clearly expressing to the user what the system understands and what it will do.

  5. Feedback Mechanisms:Providing visual, auditory or haptic feedback showing that the user’s voice command has been received and processed.

Beyond-Screen Experience Design

Experience design,is not just about arranging pixels on screens.

VUI, by further expanding this concept, requires creating “beyond-screen” experiences. This means that interaction is integrated with the user’s physical environment, other senses, and the flow of daily life.

For example, in a smart home system, a user saying “turn on the lights” is not the same as simply pressing a button on a screen. This directly affects the user’s comfort, safety, and quality of life. It is an action. Designers must consider the entire experience created by such interactions, that is, the “off-screen” effect.

The Future: Voice and Beyond

VUI technology is just the beginning. In the future, voice interactions will combine with other natural interfaces (e.g., gesture control, brain-computer interfaces) to create more immersive and holistic experiences. experience design, in this complex and dynamic future, users
